What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ originates from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, martial arts designed to help smaller individuals overcome larger opponents through leverage, technique, and strategy. In the early 1900s, Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, taught the Gracie family in Brazil, who refined it into what we now call Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ is now a widely recognized self-defense system, used by law enforcement, military personnel, and civilians worldwide.
While sport Jiu-Jitsu has grown in popularity, The Path remains committed to BJJ’s original purpose: self-defense.
Why train BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu builds confidence, resilience, and real-world self-defense skills. It teaches control, not aggression, allowing you to stay calm under pressure and protect yourself without relying on size or strength.
BJJ develops valuable skills off the mats, too, including: problem-solving, patience, and adaptability, the ability to set boundaries, stay composed in high-stress situations, and navigate challenges with confidence.
